What is a single sign-on?
Single sign-on (SSO) is a robust and highly secure login service that allows you to log in to most IET websites using a single account.
The IET’s SSO system is built on standard Microsoft technology which is regularly updated, in line with industry best practice, to improve performance and mitigate security threats.
IET members can also opt for two-factor authentication, which will provide an additional layer of security for their IET account.
A self-service portal enables you to manage your email address, two-factor authentication and password.
As well as our main website at 4hns.eduftp.net, you will also be able to use your account to access other IET platforms including: Bookshop, Career Manager, the Digital Library, Events, IET EngX, IET.tv and Inspec Direct.
Please note that certain IET systems used by volunteers, including Adestra, Event webform, Plus! For Events, OpenWater and the Marketing toolkit, are not currently included and require separate login accounts.
I'm having trouble logging in to my account
You can reset your password if you need to. Click on the “Forgot your password?” link in the login form and follow the instructions given.
Please note that if you originally registered using either Google or Office 365 you should log in using the same method. If you no longer use your third-party account, please contact our Member and Customer Relations team to regain access to your IET account.
I’ve lost access to my email account or phone number. What should I do?
Our Member and Customer Relations team will be able to help you regain access to your IET account They will need to ask you some security questions to confirm your identity; if you're an IET member, it’s helpful to have your IET membership number to hand.
I’ve forgotten my password. What should I do?
Follow the link labelled “Forgot your password?” above the password field in the login form.
You'll be asked to enter your email address, and then enter the verification code sent to that address, before you can update your password.
We require complex passwords (minimum 12 characters, including a mix of letters, numbers and special characters) in line with recommendations from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to help protect your personal information.
I'm trying to reset my password, but my email address is not recognised
Could you have registered with a different email address? Please check this before contacting us (see below).
Please note that if you originally registered using either Google or Office 365 you should log in using the same method. If you no longer use your third-party account, please contact our Member and Customer Relations team to regain access to your IET account.
I’m an IET member, but I can’t see my membership record when logged in
This is most likely because you are logged in with a non-member account. It may be that you have registered more than one account.
If you can’t access your membership record (via MyIET) when logged in, please contact our Member and Customer Relations team. You’ll need to answer some security questions to confirm your identity; it's helpful to have your IET membership number to hand.
How do I contact the IET about problems with logging in?
Please contact our Member and Customer Relations team. You’ll need to answer some security questions to confirm your identity; if you're an IET member, it's helpful to have your IET membership number to hand.
I need to register (create an account)
If you don’t have an account, you’ll need to register if you want to join the IET, book to attend one of our events, contribute to a discussion or buy a book on our website.
To begin, go to 4hns.eduftp.net/login
If you’re already an IET member, please follow the link to register with your membership number. This will allow you to access details of your membership once logged in. You’ll need to enter your membership number, surname and date of birth, to link your account to your member record.
If you’re not an IET member, or you are applying to join for the first time, simply click on the “Register” button.
You’ll next need to enter the email address you will use to log in to your new account.
- We’ll send you a verification code by email which you must enter to confirm that you own that address.
- Once you have verified your email address (so long as that address is not already registered), you can add a password which you will use whenever you log in to your IET account.
- IET members will also have the option to enable two-factor authentication for extra security (see below for more details); this is not mandatory and can be skipped.
If you’re not already a member you will be asked to provide your name and consent to marketing communications (members skip this step, as we already hold this information).
This completes your registration; click the Continue button on the confirmation page to return to the IET website.
For IET colleagues only: Once you have registered your account, please raise a ticket with the IT Service Desk asking to be included in the staff group.
I’ve submitted my email address, but didn’t receive the verification code
Please confirm you have entered the address correctly, and check the Spam or Junk folder in your email client. You can also request another code (click the “Send new code” button).
I’m trying to register, but I see the error message “You are already registered”
This message will be displayed if the system finds an existing account matching either your IET membership number, or the email address you have entered.
If you see this message please do not attempt to create a new account. If you cannot retrieve your login details (see above), please contact the Member and Customer Relations team.
Can I log in using a third-party account?
We previously offered users the option of using a Facebook, Google or Office 365 account to log in to the IET. These options are no longer supported for new users (from December 2024).
Please note that if you originally registered using either Google or Office 365 you can continue to log in using the same method. If you no longer use your third-party account, please contact our Member and Customer Relations team to regain access to your IET account.
I registered with my IET Volunteer Office 365 account but I no longer have access to this account. What do I do?
Please contact the Member and Customer Relations team who will be able to help.
What is two-factor authentication?
Also called multi-factor authentication (MFA) or two-step authentication, two-factor authentication is an additional, opt-in service for IET members only, which provides an extra layer of security for your account. When you log into your account, a one-time verification code is generated and sent to your mobile (or landline) number, which you must then enter to complete the login process.
Two-factor authentication is entirely optional for IET members: it can be set up when you register, or subsequently via MyIET at 4hns.eduftp.net/my (select the “MyDetails” tab and follow the link to “Edit Login Details”).
I’d like to set up two-factor authentication, but I don’t have a mobile phone.
Two-factor authentication can also be set up using a landline telephone number, so you can receive your verification code by telephone call.
If I’m using single sign on, will the system keep me logged in?
Your login session will automatically expire after one hour of inactivity.
What happens to my personal data?
If you are using your Google or Office 365 account to verify your user details (note that these options are no longer available for new users), some information is passed from the login provider to the IET. The IET does not send any data to the login provider, who only knows that the user has linked their identity to an IET account.
If you’ve chosen to opt in for two-factor authentication, we will request the minimum amount of data (name, email address and a mobile or telephone number for your one-time passcode to be sent to) solely for the purpose of providing you with two-factor authentication.
The number you provide will be stored in our system as part of the single sign-on process for two-factor authentication.
In line with GDPR requirements, no personal details used to register on the system will be used for marketing purposes without your explicit consent. Please be aware that the SSO system will not update your email address for communications from the IET if you change the email address you use to log in. This information is only used to provide you with a secure login to our websites. If you change your email address for login, please remember to also update your contact information in MyIET.
How do I update my details?
To update your personal details with us, please visit MyIET at 4hns.eduftp.net/my
Here you can also manage your login credentials (email address and password) and multi-factor authentication (IET members only): select the “MyDetails” tab and follow the link to “Edit Login Details”.
If you change your email address for login, please remember to also update your contact information in MyIET (unless you wish to maintain separate email addresses for login and IET communications).
